Our Work

Edmonton LRT Project, Canada

Project Overview

  • “Transafe Consulting Ltd” wanted to gain knowledge on low level tram systems used in the UK and Europe to help them integrate new tram lines
  • TMS spent 5 days with the client in Edmonton, Canada.
  • 8,000 mile round trip
  • Report provided to the client with advise on design of the new infrastructure

Our approach

TMS recently worked with Canadian Company “Transafe Consulting Ltd” on a large LRT (tram) project in Edmonton, Canada. Transafe employed TMS to gain a European perspective on low floor integrated tram systems, as there are proposals to introduce them in the Canadian city. The current tram lines in Edmonton operate a high floor system, which is mostly segregated from existing highway infrastructure, but new lines will be more integrated with improved accessibility for all users.

Our Technical Director of Engineering Services, Harminder Aulak visited met with “Transafe Consulting Ltd” in Edmonton. With extensive knowledge of LRT networks within the UK we were perfectly placed to be able to advise on the best way to achieve their goals. Our approach was to assess their current infrastructure with regards to integrating the new lines into the current Edmonton network and how similar projects work in the UK. With one of their main goals to improve accessibility for all users we were able to advise on how best to integrate the new lines and introduce low floor tram systems.

A report was written by Harminder Aulak and delivered to the client with recommendations on how best to integrate the new lines and insight on how they work within the UK and europe. “It was good to exchange ideas and offer advice to the Canadian Engineers working on the project. We have gained a lot of road safety knowledge of tram systems, having worked on LRT projects in Dublin (Ireland) and Birmingham (UK). The transfer of such knowledge and skills will be crucial to ensure the success of the scheme.” – Harminder Aulak, Technical Director of Engineering Services
