Potteries Museum & Art Gallery, Safety Assessment and Accessibility Audit

Project Overview

  • Safety Assessment and Accessibility Audit carried out for Stoke on Trent City Council
  • Extension to the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery to house a restore Spitfire
  • Report written taking into account the relocation of 5 disabled parking bays

In 2018 we carried out a Safety Assessment and Accessibility Audit at the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery in Stoke. Stoke on Trent City Council are intending to build an extension to the museum to house a restored Spitfire, the project brief was to provide a Safety Assessment and Accessibility Audit on the relocation of 5 disabled parking bays.

Considering all users including; visually impaired and mobility impaired, the project team assessed the proposed relocation of the bays to identify any accessibility and safety issues.  A full report was written and provided to the client outlining any potential issues which may arise for users.

Rob Cyples, Team Leader on the project, said: “It was a great honour to work on a project with such an iconic purpose. The new glass extension project will house the fully restored Spitfire RW388 which was previously housed in a small gallery section of the museum (donated to the City of Stoke-on-Trent in 1972). This honours Reginald J. Mitchell, the designer of the Spitfire, who was born and educated in Staffordshire.”
