1. Audits
Throughout 2018 we carried out 699 audits across the whole of the UK and Ireland. We carried out over 400 audits for consultants and 117 directly for house builders. The below map shows some of the places we’ve visited!
2. Training
In 2018 we delivered 105 courses and trained 1058 delegates. 42 of these courses were open courses and 63 were in-house courses, this accumulates to a total of 326 training days.
Amongst the most popular courses this year were the Highways Inspector training course, where 23 were carried out.
The ROSPA 10 day and modular courses were also a hit as we carried out 8 over the course of 2018.
We developed a brand-new course around the WCHAR (Designing for Walking, Cycling and Horse-Riding) standard and carried out 6 of these courses.
3. New Staff
We started off the year with Richard Cook joining at the beginning of January, then a few months later Nick Newton joined the team from Amey. Nick has run training courses throughout the UK and even went over to Malta to train their road safety engineers. Richard has been learning the role of a road safety auditor and has carried out over 150 audits with the auditing team.
4. Hammy Cycled from Penrith to Tynemouth
Many of you may have met Hammy, our Technical Director of Engineering Services. He cycled part of the C2C network and here’s what he had to say.
“Cycled part of the C2C National Cycle Network from Penrith to Tynemouth via the Yorkshire Dales. I cycled the first section from Whitehaven to Penrith via the Lake District a few years ago and wanted to complete the whole route. The C2C is the most popular long distance cycle route in Britain and up to 15,000 cyclists complete it every year.
Total mileage from Penrith to Tynemouth was about 90miles, achieved over two days, stopping over in Stanhope. The first day was tough with major successive climbs across the Yorkshire Dales, but some hair-raising fast downhills where I hit 48mph! (the photo below is at the top of Hartside Pass). The second day was pure joy with a 15-mile-long downhill section from the Moors down to Consett.
I would recommend this route to any cyclist enthusiast as the scenery is stunning and though tough, it’s very rewarding.”
5. TMS Staff Keep Running
We have quite a few keen runners at TMS, Darren previously ran the London Marathon in 2010 raising £3,000 for Cancer Research. Richard ran 4 half marathons including the Great North Run where he raised £1,000 for “Rethink Mental Illness” and is now training for the London Marathon in support of Livability.
6. GG 119
GG 119 replaced the previous Road Safety Audit Standard DMRB HD 19/15. There were some changes that the client needed to be aware of, such as the need to provide a Decision Log within a Response Report for each audit.
Once the new standard was announced we made sure that the whole team was briefed and the relevant changes to reports were made moving forward.
